Welcome to Generation Gap where we ask you about your favorite generation of a certain multi-generational car nameplate. Then, explain why your choice is right to the rest of us uneducated folks.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
While I generally tend towards the esoteric and exclusive or the mundane and ordinary on Generation Gap, I figured it was high time to tackle some of the more iconic enthusiast nameplates. This week we vote on which 5 series Bimmer generation is the best. Do you prefer the earlier ones with their classy Bavarian angles or are you more in the Bangle club?
The options:
First Generation [1972 - 1981] E12 and facelift
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Second Generation [1981 - 1988] E28
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Third Generation [1988 - 1995] E34
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Fourth Generation [1996 - 2003] E39 and facelift
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Fifth Generation [2004 - 2010] E60-1 and facelift
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Sixth Generation [2011 - Present] F10-1/7 and facelift

Surprised G10 has 0 votes. My second choice after E28.

The E28 is just such a attractive car.

In europe, yes. Not so much in the us with the diving board bumpers, thats why i chose the e34. Europe or usa, same small bumpers.

E12, followed closely by E28. E34 is okay. I don’t really do “curvy kidney” BMWs.

I will fully admit that US spec bumpers ruin that car.

E34 all the way.
Says the guy who's owned two E60s, and won't be looking for an F10 to replace it.

The E12 is so classy, it’s basically an updated Neue Klasse sedan and not a clean sheet design so much of the same (stunning) cues carried over.

Damn. Sounds like a voice of experience speaking. How bad was it?

This bad. Easily the most disappointing car I've ever driven.

The only answer is E39. One of the best cars ever made, full stop.

Perhaps the last truly good looking BMW in terms of elegance and simplicity.

I like the M version of the E60 Touring the most, because V10 Ferrari slaying wagon. But as a model overall I prefer the E39, and the E12 seems to have the best styling of the lot.
My vote goes to the E39. Clean lines and great engines. Best of both worlds.

An E34 was the first bmw I ever drove. Manual, dark blue, in coastal Maryland in 1998. Kinda perfect. My neighbor’s car reminds me of that all the time.
